Search Engine Optimization in the Age of ChatGPT
The focus of search engine optimization (SEO) has shifted drastically. An increasing portion of users no longer browses lists of links on Google but expects ready-made answers from AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity). The goal of traditional SEO was ranking and clicking. In contrast, the goal of AI SEO is citation. The objective is for language models to understand, deem credible, and include the company's expertise as a source in their generated answers.
Achieving this requires a well-defined, new framework. A CEO obviously does not need to code, but to define the right strategy for their company, they must be aware of the basic concepts of the current most effective methodology.
The language of strategy and business:
AI SEO, GEO & AEO: (AI SEO – Artificial Intelligence Search Engine Optimization, GEO - Generative Engine Optimization, AEO - Answer Engine Optimization). In everyday business practice, these three terms are used synonymously. AI SEO is the most common business umbrella term. GEO is the engineering term (the machine no longer just searches but generates content), while AEO refers to the fact that systems now operate as "Answer Engines."
LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization): A narrower, more specific branch of the above concepts that focuses specifically and exclusively on technically convincing chat models (e.g., ChatGPT).
AI Readiness: The baseline technical and content state that makes it possible for artificial intelligence to process the website without errors in the first place.
Information Gain: The most important content currency of the AI era. It means the net new knowledge (own data, internal research, case study) that the company adds to the information already found on the web. General articles without information gain are demoted by the algorithms.
AI Visibility: Also used as a synonym for AI SEO, but it is different. It represents the ultimate Key Performance Indicator (KPI). It shows how often and in how positive a context the brand appears in AI-generated answers.
The language of the engine room and technology:
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): The engine that drives it all. Before answering, the machine searches the live internet through this technology and compiles the answer from fresh, credible sources.
Entity SEO (Entity-based optimization): AI thinks in "things" (entities), not keywords. This process means transforming the company, products, and people into clear logical nodes at the backend code level.
Atomic Claims (Factual statements): Short, 2-3 sentence, unambiguous, factual statements on the website that the machine can immediately lift into its own answer without modification.
The complete framework summarized: If we string the above elements into a single logical chain, we get the following idea as an illustration:
"Within the framework of our AI SEO (GEO/AEO) strategy, we must create our website's AI Readiness state, which we achieve at the code level using Entity SEO. Following this, we create content rich in Information Gain and dotted with Atomic Claims. The goal of this is for the search engines' RAG systems to choose us as a primary source, thereby drastically increasing our company's AI Visibility metric."
